On 1 January 2020, part of Snillfjord Municipality (the island of Hemnskjela) merged with Hitra, but without change of the old symbols of Hitra municipality.
Orkland Municipality was also created on 1 January
2020 by the merger of Orkdal
Municipality, Agdenes Municipality, Meldal
Municipality and most of Snillfjord Municipality.
