The municipal web site explains the symbolism to the orkla river making turns,
which gave name to the valley, the municipality and its main town (Orkanger). It
is also said that the pale (in Norwegian literally a "column") is usually a
wider charge, while here it is made thinner and therefore a pallet (in Norwegian
literally a "small column"), to indicate the slim river. The NRK TV report of
the mayor explaining the Orkdal coat of arms.
