On 1 January 2020, part of Snillfjord Municipality
(the island of Hemnskjela) merged with Hitra, but without change of the old
symbols of the municipality.

The coat of arms and flag were adopted by the municipal council on
29. October 1986. They were based on an idea by Ketil Gylland from Fillan and
drawn by the designer Einar Skjervold from Trondheim who has also design several
other municipal arms and flags. Hitra has a
population of red deer, said to be the largest in Northern Europe. The arms and flag
were approved by Royal Resolution dated 7. August 1987, in which the arms were
blazoned as "I blått et sølv hjortehode", meaning "Azure a stag's head
argent", and the flag was defined as "I blått et hvitt hjortehode", meaning
"Azure a stag's head white". The blue to be used is a regular heraldic blue.
