Gifhorn Coat of Arms

[Gifhorn city CoA] 5:2 image by Jörg Majewski, 5 Apr 2007

Shield Azure, a lion rampant Or, armed and tongued Gules, in base a hunting horn Gules.
Meaning:
Gifhorn gained the rights of a market town in 1275 by Duke Johann of Braunschweig-Lüneburg. Since then Gifhorn had been either denoted as a city or as a "Wigbold". First seals existed since the 14th century, already displaying the lion of the Welfen kin, to which the Dukes of Braunschweig-Lüneburg belonged, and the canting horn. The current pattern is based on that one of H.Ahrens (1891). The tinctures are known since the 18th century. The Welfen lion here is golden, normally it would be blue. The city arms also influencec the county arms of 1929.
