Schermer municipality
Population (1 Jan 2003): 4.861; area: 64,87 km². Settlements: Stompetoren
(seat), Driehuizen, Grootschermer, Oterleek, Schermerhorn,
Zuidschermer.
The presdent municipality was formed on 1 Aug 1970 by the merger of
the former municipalities of Oterleek, Zuid- en Noord Schermer, and Schermerhorn.
The municipal flag of Schermer was adopted 30 May 2000 by municipal
resolution #7. The design was based on the colors of the former polderboard
"De Schermer", and elements of the municipal
arms have been added.
Description: two equally long stripes, blue with four yellow mill-wings
placed in saltire on top of a white pike, and green; over the dividing
line a yellow fly-chevron.

The arms of Zuid- en Noord-Schermer (South and North Schermer) were:
Azure two pikes or. Confirmed 22 oktober 1817. I guess the two pikes represent
the two parts.
The arms of Oterleek were: Or, charged with three downward chevrons
gules. Confirmed 22 oktober 1817.)
Schermerhorn used to have a mole in their arms and flag. Yet, Sierksma
gives 1962 for the adoption of the flag and the text suggests it used a
different flag before that. I wonder whether there used to be a mix-up
between "mol" (mole) and "molen" (mill) all the more so because "molen"
was often spelt "mole".
The arms of Schermerhorn were: Vert, a mole sable on a natural base.
Confirmed 22 oktober 1817.
Apparently, this is where the green comes from. De Schermer, originally
"Schermeer", was one of the big lakes of Noordholland, poldered in by Jan
Adrriaenszn. Leeghwater from 1631 to 1635. He needed 51 mills for this
enterprise so the mill is quite appropriate. [I doubt I would have placed
it in the blue water though.]
In 1962 Schermerhorn was the only one with a flag, which in 1962 was
made equal to the arms, except the mole had no base.
The new municiality was created 1 august 1970. (We probably have all
that on our page though.)
