Shield Or, in base an inescutcheon Argent charged with two batons Gules in saltire, issuant from inescutcheon St. James the Elder Argent, nimbed and coated Gules, holding a canteen Gules in his right hand and a baton (a pilgrim's staff) in his left hand.
Meaning:
The oldest seal of the city dates from the 14th century and shows only a shield with a cross. This is the coat of arms of the Abbey of Fulda, the former owner. The current arms first appeared on 17th century seals. The batons are unusual attributes of the saint, alluding to the legend that he had been smitten by batons.
The arms were approved in 1952 by Minister of Interior of Hesse.
