Weikersheim Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a red shield is a silver (= white) initial "W" topped by a golden (= yellow) coronet.
Meaning:
Since the 12th century the Lords of Weikersheim ruled the town as vassals of the Bishops of Würzburg. Weikersheim gained city rights in the 14th century and at the end of the 15th century it became a possession of the Lords of Weikersheim, later on of the Princes of Hohenlohe. The oldest seal dates from around 1400 and already showed the crowned initial "W". In prints from 1593 there are two lions as supporters, the coronet is above the shield and beneath is the planet symbol of Mercury, flanked by sun and moon.

The current pattern of the coat of arms and the colours, based upon the colours of Hohenlohe, were officially confirmed on 7. November 1949 by government of Württemberg-Baden. Banner and coat of arms were confirmed a second time on 31 May 1968 by minister of interior of Baden-Württemberg, published in GABl 134/1969. The traditional colours, not matching the colours of the coat of arms were confirmed on demand of the city. Stoob (1962) and Stadler (1971) previously had reported a plain(?) red - white flag, the colours of Hohenlohe.
