[Main-Tauber county flag] 5:2 image by Stefan Schwoon, 21 Mar 2001
approved 28 November 1989

Description

White-red with the arms. The cross on the arms is the cross of the Teutonic Order which used to have possessions in the county historically. Source: Falko Schmidt, arms from Bardua 1987.
Stefan Schwoon, 21 Mar 2001

Adopted 28 November1989, according to Dirk Schönberger's Administrative Divisions of the World website. From Ralf Hartemink's International Civic Arms website:

The arms were granted on 19 March 1974. The arms are a combination of the wheel of the State of Mainz and the points of the arms of Franconia. Historically the district was ruled for the largest part by the bishops of Würzburg, and the points of Franconia symbolise the diocese. The other, smaller, parts of the district were ruled by the bishops of Mainz and the Teutonic Order. The cross is the cross of the Order.

Variant#1

[Main-Tauber indoor hanging flag] image by Klaus-Michael Schneider, 3 Mar 2011

Description of flag#1:
The ratio is approx 2:1. The hanging flag is a vertical red - white bicolour. In its centre is the coat of arms of the county topped by an inscription in black capitals "MAIN-TAUBER-KREIS" , which is placed upon a white background.
Source: I spotted this flag in the local county hall in Tauberbischofsheim on 18 February 2011.
Klaus-Michael Schneider, 3 Mar 2011

Description of coat of arms:
It is a Franconian Rake. Its red half is superimposed by a silver wheel having six spokes, its silver half by a black cross patty. Silver here is realized as grey.
Meaning:
Main-Tauber-Kreis was generated, when the counties of Bad Mergentheim and Tauberbischofsheim merged. The silver wheel in a red field is taken from the coat of arms of the archbishopric of Mainz. Tauberbischofsheim was part of that territory until the archbishopric had been dissolved in 1802. The cross patty is that one of the Teutonic order. According to [sta71], p.19 Mergentheim had been the capital of the order from 1526 to 1809. The rake is symbolizing that the county is part of Badisch Franken. The heraldic colour of silver in this flag is realized as grey. It is realized as proper silver e.g. on car stickers of the county.
