Shield Or an eagle Sable tongued Gules, chief barry of four of Argent and Azure.
Meaning:
The original name of village and castle had been simply Stein (English: stone). The current name was given around 1345, after Stein had gained the rights of a market town and a city. The first city seal from 1364 displayed the imperial eagle on top of a triplemount, as the Lords of Hilpoltstein had been commissionaires of the Holy Roman Empire. The chief just displayed a fess. The fess appeared in all versions of the arms until 1609 (e.g. Siebmacher's armourial). All later seals displayed the current chief. The tinctures had been always blue and white. The shield of the lords was parted per fess of white and blue. It could also be possible that the colours are referring to the Wittelsbach kin, who acquired the city in 1386.
