Shield Or an embattled wall issuant Argent in bend, a demi-bear Sable tongued Gules leaning on the embattlement by his forepaws, chief lozengy of Argent and Azure.
Meaning:
Grafenau had been a market town already before 1300. The rights of a city were granted in 1376 by the Landgraves of Leuchtenberg. The embattled wall is symbolising the fortified character of the city. The bear is a canting element of the Lordship of Bärnstein, to which Grafenau belonged. The chief displays the lozengy arms of the Wittelsbach kin. The current pattern appeared first on a city seal from 1510. In the 16th and 18th century the bear was sometimes displayed passant on top of the wall. The tinctures changed frequently until the 20th century.

The banner has never been approved officially. The arms were granted on 3 February 1508 by Duke Friedrich of Pfalz-Neuburg.
