Freyung-Grafenau County

The county is situated in the hilly regions between the Danube and the Czech border. It was established in 1972 by a merger of the counties of Grafenau and Wolfstein. Name giver and seat of the latter had been Wolfstein Castle above the municipality of Ort, which was incorporated into Freyung in 1954. The seat is the city of Freyung.

Freyung-Grafenau County Coat of Arms.

Lozengy of Argent and Azure chapé Argent, at dexter charged with a sinister facing bear rampant Sable and at sinister with a wolf rampant Gules.
Meaning:
Most of the area around Wolfstein Castle belonged to the Bishopric of Passau since the 13th century and became in 1806 a part of Bayern. The wolf in the left part of the arms is canting and is at the same time taken from the arms of Passau. The bear is taken as a symbol of the Bärnstein district (Bär = bear). This territory, formerly part of Grafenau County, became a part of Bavaria already in 1438. The lozenges are those of the arms of Bayern.
