From Ralf Hartemink's International Civic Arms website:
The arms were granted in 1969 and show in the chief the sword as a symbol for St. Martin, the patron saint of both Marktoberdorf and Obergünzburg. The lower part combines the arms of the State of Augsburg [red-white] with the red and blue shield of the Abbey of Kempten. Both the bishops of Augsburg as the Prince-Abbotts of Kempten owned large parts of the county.Literature: Stadler 1964-1972.
