From Ralf Hartemink's International Civic Arms website:
The arms were granted on October 8, 1974.The arms are a combination of elements from the arms of the former counties. The sword is taken from the arms of the Marktoberdorf county and the [crozier] from Füssen county. The lion [comes from the arms of the Kaufbeuren county and] is the lion of the former Benedictine abbey in Irsee, that owned a large part of the present county.
