Meaning:
Schwäbisch Gmünd is the first city, founded by the Staufen kin around 1160, and it is located in the centre of the Staufen heartland. In 1260 the city gained the privilege of Direct Imperial Rule, which was lost in 1803, when the city was incorporated into Württemberg. Since the existence of the oldest seal since probably 1250 with prints since 1277, the unicorn always had been the symbol of the city. Its meaning is unknown. It probably had to do something with the Staufen kin. Coloured arms existed since the 15th century, when the unicorn had been golden. Since 1605 (Siebmacher) it had been depicted as silver.
