The municipality of Formigueiro (7,053 inhabitants in 2017; 58,783 ha) is
located 300 km north-west of Porto Alegre.
Formigueiro was elevated on 15
November 1827 to the 8th district of Cachoeira do Sul, to be transferred by
Provincial Law No. 530 promulgated on 7 April 1863 to the newly created
municipality of São Sepé. The municipality of Formigueiro was established by
State Law No. 4,5755 promulgated on 9 January 1963.

The flag of Formigueiro is white with a green-yellow-red diagonal running
from the flag's lower left corner to its upper right corner, superimposed with a
white rectangle inscribing the municipal coat of arms.
