Description of the flag

Here is the official flag of Rutgers, the nation's 8th oldest university. Rutgers was established in 1766 by royal charter of George III. It was originally named "Queens College" (Columbia was originally "Kings College"), to honor George III's wife, Queen Charlotte. Up until a few years ago, the university flag had a stylized "Q" where the "R" now is positioned in the center of the scarlet field (the university's historic color). The "Q" stood for Queens, and the new "R" obviously stands for Rutgers. Col. Henry Rutgers was a hero of the Revolution and a chief benefactor of the university in the early 1800's, and the school changed its name to honor him. The crown atop the "R" (and formerly atop the "Q") recounts the royal charter and the school's history as Queens College. Hope you enjoy the attached photo and you can find further pictures of the "Q" flag. One still sees the "Q" flag flying on campus and at football games, thought the new "R" flag seems to have come into much more common usage.
