The highlight of the evening was the unveiling of the new Essex-Middle River flag, which was introduced by Will Feuer, treasurer of the Heritage Society of Essex and Middle River. Designed by Lilyanna Cotton, a graphic arts student at Kenwood High School, the flag is primarily light blue and dark blue, which are the school colors of Kenwood, Chesapeake, and Our Lady of Mount Carmel High Schools.
The colors also represent the sky and the water, tying in our area’s rich tradition in both aviation and the waterfront. The white compass symbolizes unity and is a nod to Compass Road which connects both communities.
Baltimore County Executive Kathleen Klausmeier, Sen. Johnny Ray Salling (R-Baltimore County), County Councilman David Marks, School Board Member Rod McMillion and the Essex Day Festival’s mascot Cubey were also in attendance. Elected officials presented citations to the Heritage Society and Kenwood High School to mark the occasion.
Essex-Middle River Flags are 3-by-5-foot and can be purchased at the Heritage Society Museum.
