Background

The Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF), previously the National Resistance Army, are the armed forces of Uganda.

The origin of the Ugandan military can be traced back to 1902 when the Uganda battalion of the King's African Rifles was formed. They were trained by the British colonialists and became the Uganda Rifles after independence in 1962. Its name has changed several times but the UPDF was constituted in 1995 following the adoption of a new constitution for the country. The UPDF is made up of a military component which is the armed forces (land forces and an air wing) and a civil component which is mainly administrative.

Joint Service flag

The current flag of Uganda People's Defence Force is divided diagonally, green over light blue, with new logo of Defence Force placed in the center of upper part of the flag. National colors are placed in six horizontal stripes along the bottom edge of the flag. Its ratio is 1:2.

Its previous flag was green with national colors along the bottom edge, but a different emblem was placed in the center of the green field.

Special Forces Command

The flag of Special Forces Command is maroon with national colors placed in six horizontal stripes along the bottom edge of the flag. The emblem is placed on a white disc placed in the center of the maroon field. Its ratio is 1:2.
