1925 flag

Buriatia Flag of 1925 image by Jaume Ollé, 13 November 1996

The Buriat-Mongol republic was created en 1923, and adopted a flag near 1925. The first flag was red with the first letters of her name in the upper hoist (BMASSR).

ca. 1927 – 1937 (possible) flag

According to Vexillographia, there is possibly a flag. There is no firm information on any pre-1937 flag. This might have relation to draft constitution of 1927. I couldn’t locate its text.

Latin script was changed to Russian in 1939. It seems that letter “A” was missing, I added it. I also suppose that between B and M there should be a line, instead of a dot. That would be in line with later flags.

1939 – 4 Jun 1954
I located this version on the web, it is in line with the 1937 constitution. It appears that name of RSFSR in Buryat at that time was RSFSR, even though modern Buryat abbreviation is ZSBNHOU (Russia in the Buryat language is Oros, but also Rossi). Consistency requires that if Buryatia is ASSR in Buryat, then Russia at the same time cannot be ZSBN (this means SSR; “H” stands for “federative”)."

1958.07.07

Buriatia Flag of 1937 image by Jaume Ollé, 13 November 1996

In 1958 the republic was renamed only Buriatia and 7 July 1958 adopted a new flag with the name only in russian language which probably was a mistake. It was used ten days only!

1958.07.17 flag

The omitted name in Buriatian language was added only ten days after, and 17 July 1958 adopted a new flag.

1978 flag

On 25 December 1978 "ASSR" was placed below each name:
BURÂTSKAÂ (in Russian)
ASSR
BURÂDAI (in Buryat)
ASSR
