Kremnica, also known as Golden Kremnica, was one of the most important
gold mining towns in the Middle Ages. Kremnica became well-known with its
Mint, Kremnica ducats and gold florins. Kremnica lies on terraces in the
central portion of the Kremnicke vrchy (Kremnica Hills), the northernmost
mountains of volcanics origin in Slovakia. The highly varying landscape
relief, picturesque woods, and mountain meadows in Kremnica's hinterland
create, together with historic buildings of the town, a unique complex
of a former free royal town.

Kremnica (Hungarian: Körmöcbánya, German: Kremnitz. It was a German
- Hungarian - Slovakian town in Bars (Slovakian Tekov) County of Hungary
till 1918/1920 (Czechoslovakian occupation). The city lost its German and
Hungarian inhabitants. In this city live 7130 inhabitants (1990 census).

The oldest seal of the city dates from 1331 and shows the patron saint,
St. Catherine with the wheel, and in front of her a small shield with the
arms of Anjou. In 1432 the seal showed a shield
with only the broken wheel and the letter C. The letter stands for Cremnica,
not Catherine. The wheel was combined with the arms of Anjou
in 1567 to form the present arms, which have not changed since.
