The municipality of Šentjernej was formed in 1995 by parts of the municipality of Novo Mesto.

Municipal flag of Šentjernej

The coat of arms and the flag of Šentjernej are prescribed by Decision Odlok o grbu in zastavi Občine Šentjernej, adopted on 15 July 1996, and published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije, nr. 40, 27 July 1996, pp. 3536-8.
The new Municipal Statutes Statut Občine Šentjernej, adopted on 14 December 2000 and published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije, 4/2001, include the blazon of the coat of arms and the description of the flag, thus confirming the aforementioned Decision.

The symbols were designed by Valt Jurečič of Heraldika d.o.o. and Heraldica Slovenica, who kindly provided drawings from which the images shown on this page were made.

The flag is based on the coat of arms. It is rectangular, in proportion 2:5, vertically divided yellow-green-yellow with the rooster from the coat of arms in the middle. The vertical stripes are of equal size, and the rooster is prescribed to be not bigger then 8/10 and not less the 2/3 of the hoist size.

The Decision gives the colour specifications as follows:
- Yellow: Intercolor'87 Y100-M10 / CMYK 0-20-100-0
- Blue: Intercolor'87 C100-M50 / CMYK 100-35-0-10
- Red: Intercolor'87 Y100-C-100 / CMYK 0-90-100-10
- Green: Intercolor'87 Y100-C-100 / CMYK 100-0-100-40

However, the Decision as published in the official gazette prescribes that the three flag fields should be of equal width, and therefore the middle one is not square, and that there is only the horizontal version of the flag.

The coat of arms of Šentjernej is a golden singing rooster in green standing aground.
According to Stanič & Jakopič [j2s05], the parish seal used in the 1860s includes a horse, as a symbol of local horse breeding and famous races.
