The arms are Argent a domed baptismal font Azure with pyramidal capitals and in chief a wolf head erased Sable langued and armed and eyed Gules facing dexter between two crescents Gules pointing upwards. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "AGUIAR - VIANA DO ALENTEJO".
Meaning:
"Aguiar" is a Portuguese surname, cognate to Spanish "Aguilar", both from Latin "aquila", "eagle" (though "aguiar" does not have any substantive meaning). All "Aguiar" armigerous lineages I know of have canting arms with eagles, which do not show on the coat of arms.

Flag and arms adopted and published in the official journal Diário da República: III Série in 1996.06.12.

Presentation of Aguiar

Aguiar Commune is one of the three communes of the Viana do Alentejo municipality (q.v.). This commune had 699 inhabitants in 2001 and covers 27,81 km². Aguiar, currently a village, used to be a town and a municipality seat, from 1287 to the early 1800ies. It was then demoted to village status and the single-commune municipality was supressed (integrated into Viana do Alentejo municipality), until 1985, when the commune was restored.
