About the Flag

It is a fairly typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field gyronny (meaning city rank) of red and black.

Coat of arms

[Tomar municipality CoA] image by Sérgio Horta, 25 Oct 2001

The coat of arms is or, on a mound vert charged with a wavy fess argent semy of waves azure, a tower argent masoned sable with port and windows argent between two crosses gules: “templar”, dexter, and Christ’s Knights, sinister. Mural crown argent with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "TOMAR".
In this particular coat of arms the Christ’s Knights Order cross is not voided argent as usual, but voided of the field (or). Tomar, by the way, has an exceptionally important place in these orders’ (Portuguese Templar and Christ’s Knights Order) history.
