Shield Or, issuant from base shifted to the sinister side a mountain Tawny, crowned by an embattled mural wall Argent masoned Sable, emerging from port a creek Azure, at sinister above the wall St. Mary, robed Azure, standing on top of a crescent recumbent Argent, in dexter chief a scroll Argent charged with the words "ULFILANIS VILA". Mural crown Argent with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll with inscription in black capitals "FIÃES".
Meaning:
The name "Fiães" was derived from "Ulfilanis" (Ulfilanis - Ufilanis - Ufianis - Ufiães - Fiães). The scroll within shield refers to ãULFILANIS VILAã, which means ãtown of Wulfilasã. Wulfilas (311(?) - 383) was a West Gothic bishop from the tribe of T(h)ervings, who settled in the Lower Danubia Region in the 4th century. He died in 383. He was famous for his translation of the Holy Bible to the Gothic language and he thus also created a Gothic literary language. He owned a great estate in the territory of the nowadays town. St. Mary of Fiães is the local patron saint. Green and red are the Portuguese colours, in the gyronny pattern here obviously not considered to be national symbols.
