It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field quartered of yellow and purple.

Shield Purpure, a wheat ear at dexter and a corn cob at sinister, both Or and ordered per fess, in chief hammer and mallet Argent hilted Or superimposed by a paintbrush Argent in pale, in base a throughout bridge Argent, masoned Sable and having one arch. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll (Bénard Guedes style) with inscription in black capitals "MATANÇA".
