Krimpenerwaard polderboard

[Krimpenerwaard polderboard ] image by Jarig Bakker, 2 Dec 2003
adopted 25 Apr 1971; design: Kl. Sierksma

Dutch name: Hoogheemraadschap van de Krimpenerwaard; seat: Krimpen aan den IJssel.
Flag: vertical red and yellow, separated by a white fly-chevron bordered black. The top of the chevron is at the hoist. Proportions of flagheight, chevron, and border is 20:3:1. Adopted after design by Kl. Sierksma, after advice by the Stichting voor Banistiek en Heraldiek.

The Krimpenerwaard is formed by the Hollandsche IJssel and the Lek rivers, and named after the twinvillages Krimpen aan de Lek and Krimpen aan de IJssel. The western point of this island is the Stormpolder, where the Nieuwe Maas is fed by the Hollandsche IJssel, in which as a start of the "Deltawerken" the huge "stormvloedkering" was constructed (to ward off any silly mistakes in the first construction-stages). At Krimpen aan de Lek the Nieuwe Maas is fed by the Lek.

The polderboards of Nederwaard and Overwaard are together in charge of the watermanagement in the Alblasserwaard. They are the founders of a famous groupo of windmills near Kinderdijk. The flag is more a standard than a real flag; the arms are those of Holland with the initials of the waterschap. This flag is especially flown off the "schouwboot", the showboat, from which an inspection of canals and ditches is performed.

Rijnland is one of the oldest and most important polderboards and the first to have its own arms (1596). It covers the greater part of the polder areas between the villages of Amsterdam, Haarlem, Den Haag and Gouda. The flag is similar to the arms, which are said to be derived from those of Willem II, count of Holland, Roman King (+1256). Thence the arms of Holland and the Imperial Eagle. The arms, however, are not known before 1596 and are obviously designed afterwards to show the ancient tradition of the polderboard.
