Nes village
Nes is a village in Boarnsterhim municipality, Fryslân province,
not to be confused with Nes in Dongeradeel,
and Nes in Ameland. This Nes used to be in
the former municipality of Utingeradeel; pop: (1954) 205; (1973) 163.
Nes: coat of arms: in silver a black cross, the four quarters charged with a
red water lily leaf.
The arms remind of the Teutonic Order. The arms were a black cross
on silver. The Frisian "pompebledden" signify that here was a Frisian
division of the Order. In Nes was a "commanderij" (convent), founded
in 1228 by the Teutonic Order, which received the patronage over the bishop's church
of Oldeboorn; abolished in 1580. Only the churchyard and the bell-cage
do still exist.
Flag: two vertical stripes of white and red, proportioned 2:1; in the
white stripe a black cross with a wide base of 3/4 flag height.
