Ciudad Sandino is a municipality in the Managua department of Nicaragua.
Located just outside western Managua, it had 75,000 inhabitants in 2006, and
110.000 inhabitants in 2015, on 125,3 km².
The first settlements date back to 1969 when severe flooding occurred in Managua
because of the rise of the waters of Lake Xolotlán, after a tropical cyclone. A
government project called the Permanent Organization of National Emergence (Organización
Permanente de Emergencia Nacional, OPEN) aimed to move the affected populations
to a safer place. The government purchased the cotton properties of the Blandón
family to settle there families affected by the flood of the lake.
Two areas were populated corresponding to the OPEN-3 (present population center
of Ciudad Sandino) and Bella Cruz, (known as Zone No. 8). In 1972, the
earthquake that destroyed Managua forced many families to move and settle
precariously in the OPEN-3 project. On July 17, 1979, with the fall of the
government of General Anastasio Somoza Debayle, the name of OPEN-3 was changed
to Ciudad Sandino.
In 1995, the District Development Committee requested the approval of an Act
that would elevate the District to the rank of Municipality. In October 1998,
the shores of Lake Xolotlan because of Hurricane Mitch grew and flooded the
neighborhoods adjacent to its shores, with 7,000 people moving to the Nueva Vida
settlement on the west side of Ciudad Sandino.
Through Law No. 329 published in January 2000, the municipality of Ciudad
Sandino City was created as part of the Department of Managua.

The flag has three stripes of sky blue, green and gray, and a triangle of
white color at the hoist with a map of the Municipality and the effigy of
General Augusto César Sandino.
