Temporary Mozambique flag (1983)

image by Željko Heimer, 28 Mar 2007

In April 1983 the flag of Frelimo was reintroduced, this time with a yellow star and the symbol over it. Yet later the symbol was further simplified and the current flag of Mozambique was introduced.

First official Mozambican flag (1975-1983)

The first official flag of Mozambique, adopted 25 June 1975, had four irregular triangles of yellow, black, red and green (fimbriated in white) radiating from the upper hoist, counterclockwise. In the canton (upper hoist), over the red and black stripes, was the lesser arms of the time: on a white background a black-lined cogwheel, a rifle and a hoe crossed saltire over an open book, all black on white with a red star in the upper right side.

The Coat of Arms was changed in 1982 but a new flag was only adopted in April 1983 when the current national flag was introduced. I suppose that the old lesser arms remained unchanged during that interval.

First Mozambican (pre-independence) Flag (1974-1975)

image by Željko Heimer, 28 Mar 2007

It was agreed that Mozambique should be given independence on 5 September 1974. Initially a FRELIMO (Front for Liberation of Mozambique) flag was adopted as the temporary flag for the country. FRELIMO was the party that led the struggle for independence from Portugal.  On that day a truce between Portugal and FRELIMO was agreed upon, the FRELIMO flag flew alongside the Portuguese flag. The flag was green over black over yellow fimbrated white, and with a red triangle in the hoist. It was used until 25 June 1975 when independence was formally granted.
