A Swahili trade center before the colonial era, Tete continues to dominate the west-central part of the country. In recent years the city has seen a huge influx of people following the discovery and exploitation of nearby coal deposits
The flag of the Municipality of the City of Tete is divided horizontally
white and turquoise, with the municipal emblem positioned in the centre over the
two stripes.
