Nampula subsequently adopted a flag based on the typical
Portuguese municipal flag design with the coat of arms centered on a green
and white background, gyronny of eight (city status for the municipality) by
diagonals and apothemas. The blazon of the Coat of Arms is Vert semy of
cotton (?) flowers Argent leaved Or; a representation of Our Lady of
Something-or-Other (?) Proper clothed Argent and crowned Or. Mural crown with
five visible towers (city status) and white scroll with the words "Cidade de
Nampula" in black capital letters. This flag was used until 1975 when
Mozambique become independent.
