Under the term of Municipal President Rodolfo Lara Gallardo, a call for submissions was held on 9 May 1980 for the adoption of a municipal coat of arms. On 31 May, Alfonso Treviño Villasana was declared as the winner of the call. The coat of arms has the form of a scroll, having a lance to the left and a spear to the right; weapons of the Spaniards and Indians. At the top, there are leaves of laurel and evergreen oak for liberty and the Independence. At the bottom is the year 1617, when Tula was founded. The inner section is divided into three sections: in the very center is Tula leather as a symbol of the town; in the upper-left section is Juan Bautista de Mollinedo, the town's founder and a part of the San Antonio de Padua church, which was a work of his as a missionary. The upper-right depicts an Indian and the "El Cuitzillo" archaeological site, temple for adoration during their time. The lower part depicts the Mocho Hill as the town's guardian and a lechuguilla plant under, a main source of sustenance for the people of the municipality.
