To the sides of the shield are cinnamon branches, representing its name which means the same. Behind the shield, an eagle eats a serpent on a lake, alluding to the Nationality. Below, "acaxees
1601" is read, remembering the Acaxees Rebellion of 1601 where they attempted to kick the Spaniards out of their lands. Behind the eagle are palm branches, alluding to the State. In the border
of the shield, the motto "HOSPITALIDAD, HONOR, PROGRESO" [Hospitality, Honor, Progress] is read. At the top, "CANELAS, DGO." is read. It is crested by a crown symbolizing the
Spanish era. The shield's inner section depicts the environment, with hills, a tree, a crossed pick and shovel for mining, cattle for the cattle-raising industry, log for forestal resources, and
the local San José church to the right for faith.
