Sainte-Rose is a commune in the department of Guadeloupe, on the coast of the island of Basse-Terre. There are 17,800 inhabitants on 118.6 km².
The first French settlers in Guadeloupe, 400 Frenchmen commanded by Jean du Plessis d'Ossonville and Charles Liénard de l'Olive with four monks of the order of Saint Dominic including Pierre Pélican and Raymond Breton, landed at Pointe Allègre in Sainte-Rose on June 28 1635. Jean du Plessis died in December 1635, leaving the command and governorship of the island to Charles Liénard de l'Olive. The latter attacked the Carib Indians to take their wives and steal their lands. The site was initially named Grand-Cul-de-Sac, then Saint-Pierre, and finally Sainte-Rose in 1790 (after the construction around 1745 of the church dedicated to Rose of Lima).
