The municipality of Montmélian (4,058 inhabitants in 2021; 569 ha) is located 10 km south-east of Chambéry. The fortress of Montmélianwas, one of the most redoutable in Europe, was destroyed by order of Louis XIV in 1706.

The flag of Montmélian is red with a Savoy cross
(white on red) placed along the hoist and extending over 40% of the
flag length. There is no fimbriation between the red field around the
cross and the main field.
