Presentation of Teguise

Teguise was established as a town in 1418 by Maciot de Béthencourt. Perhaps the oldest town of the whole archipelago, Teguise was the capital of Lanzarote until superseded in 1852 by wA HREf="es-gc-ar.html">Arrecife. The central settlement of Teguise is called by the locals "Villa de Teguise".

Symbols of Teguise

The flag of Teguise is in proportions 2:3, horizontally divided green-white. In its centre is the municipal coat of arms. Three versions of the flag, one without the coat of arms and two with the coat of arms, are used. On the flag for outdoors use, the height of the coat of arms is c. 80% of the flag's height. On the flag for indoors use, the height of the coat of arms is c. 50% of the flag's height. Green and white are the colours most characteristic of the landscape of the municipality, and, more generally, of the island.

The coat of arms of Teguise, used for a long time and formally introduced by the Municipal Council on 21 January 2005 is "Per fess, 1. Azure a town's skyline argent ensighned with a Royal crown open, 2. Wavy argent and azure four rocks or 3 + 1. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed".

Costa Teguise

Flag of Costa Teguise - Image by Klaus-Michael Schneider, 1 March 2011

Costa Teguise is the coastal region of the old capital. In the 1960s, the famous local artist and environmentalist César Manrique created a settlement for recreation without skyscrapers, compliant with the principles of harmony between man and nature, therefore an example of so called soft tourism.

The flag of Costa Teguise is white with the logo of the tourist board shifted to the fly. A flower, perhaps a tulip with five petals (green, light brown, dark blue, celestial blue, light blue) is superimposed by a white wind chime. Beside the tulip is a celestial blue inscription "costa", beneath a dark blue inscription "teguise", both in lower case letters.
