The municipality of Cadalso (448 inhabitants in 2016, 700 ha; municipal website) is located 110 km north of Cáceres.
Cadalso was granted in the 11th century the title of villa, separating from Santibáñez el Alto. King Alfonso XI stayed in the village during hunting parties; in the Libro de la montería, he described the nearby La Aliseda mountain, "good for boars both in winter and summer, and also inhabited by bears". The oral tradition recalls that the king met in the village his mistress, Leonor de Guzmán, before leaving to Andalusia, where he defeated the Moors in the battle of El Salado.
On 13 April 1341, Cadalso was proclaimed a free town, ruled by the Alcántara Charter.
