The parish of Chicaña is part of Yanzatza canton, Zamora-Chinchipe province.
The parish was established on 26 February 1981.

The flag of Chicaña is green with diagonal descending stripes, from top to
bottom, red, blue, white and coffee brown, each charged with a yellow star.
Green covers most of the flag, recalling that Chicaña is rich in vegetation and
agricultural production. Green is a also the symbol of the aspiration of the
inhabitants in a great and prosperous parish. Coffee brown is a symbol of
constancy, humility and confidence. It is also the distinctive colour of the
local caves, for instance the Bear's Cave, a main tourist's spot in the region.
White is a symbol of purity, surpassing and unity. Blue is a symbol of
intelligence, stability and significance. Red is a symbol of power and
prosperity. The stars represent aspiration to a better future and the four
ethnic groups that constitute the population of the parish.
