In 1875, France created a special ensign for Algerian ships,
recalling the tradition of horizontal stripes, with the French
colors. The ensign appeared in various flag plates. A date of 1875
has been assigned by Jorge Hurtado.
In 1920, complete financial and administrative autonomy was
established in Algeria and the powers of the Governor General were
increased. The Algerian departments were put on an equal footing with
those of the metropolis. The special ensign, if it still existed,
disappeared and from then on only the national flag and French rank
and service flags were used.
The same flag has previously been reviewed by McMeekin as one of those belonging to the Regency between 1671 and 1847. This is most probably erroneous.
