The municipality was established in 2007 by a merger of the municipalities of Aars (seat of the municipality), Aalestrup, Farsø and Løgstør.
It nowadays consists of 18 settlement cores. The Vesthimmerland is located on the southern bank of the Limfjord and belongs to the Nordjylland Region.

The flag is white with the coat of arms in logo style at hoist and an inscription "VESTHIMMERLANDS" (1st line) "KOMMUNE" (2nd line) "lyst til at gøre an forskel"
(=feel like making a difference) in handwriting (3rd line). The logo displays on a blue shield a flying white stork over two white waves.
