Shield Or, a lion rampant Gules.
Meaning:
The old city and the part on the Eastern bank of the Rhine had been separated in 1802, The latter adopted the name Neulaufenburg in 1804, but renamed itself as Laufenburg in 1930. The lion is that one of the Habsburg kin. Count Rudolf II of Habsburg held the fiefdom over the Monastery of Säckingen, to which Laufenburg belonged. He was local ruler since 1207 and his successors upgraded the settlement to a city in the 13th century. The first seal with prints from 1275 already displayed the lion. Since the 15th century the lion appeared on arms. It remained the symbol of the city until today, despite of the political changes in the early 19th century.
