Treuchtlingen Coat of Arms

Shield quartered, 1st and 4th quarter vair, 2nd and 3rd quarter Argent a fox salient Gules, all in a cartouche Argent, flanked by two triplets of blossoms Or and topped by a mural crown Or with five towers.
Meaning:
The existence of a town seal is proven since 1435. It displayed a fox and a goose. The goose was taken from the arms of the Lords of Hürnheim-Katzenstein, it became later the symbol of the Treuchtlingen-Möhren kin. The current pattern appeared first on the local seal from 1562 but with foxes couchant. This pattern was also displayed on an architectural sculpture on the town hall until 1717. The vair is related to the Marshals of Pappenheim, local rulers between 1447 and 1647. In 1663 the city was acquired by the Margraviate of Brandenburg-Ansbach. In 1718 the government of the margraviate ordered that the arms should display a leopard Or on a blue shield. Thus the origin of the fox had been already forgotten at that time. The former pattern was restored in 1888. Treuchtlingen gained city rights in 1898.
