Description of coat of arms:
In a silver(=white) field are two black keys crossed saltirishly. Above the keys is a small black, Greek cross. The shield has a black bordure superimposed by eleven golden(=yellow) balls.
Meaning:
According to source the pattern is based upon the 2nd main seal of the city, dated about 1320. The keys are attributes of St.Peter, the patron of the archbishopric and electorate of Köln. Probably also the black cross is alluding to the archbishopric. The balls, which had been silver until 1953 probably are local distinguishing marks.
