Description of coat of arms:
The shield is divided per pale. On the dexter side is a red embattled tower with a black portcullis in a silver(=white) field. The sinister side shows a golden(=yellow) field divided by a black bar.
Meaning:
According to source the lords of Moers gained the title of a count at the end of 12th century. A settlement established near their castle gained the rights of a city by king Albrecht I. in 1300. The coat of arms of the counts was the golden shield with black bar. In the early seals of the city since 14th century the tower appeared either side by side with the shield or topped by the shield. The current design was in use since 17th century. The painting of Hupp: "Deutsche Ortswappen" showed the tower having a blue gate without portcullis. I chose the version from the city's webpage.
