In 1929 the counties of Kempen, Krefeld and Gladbach had been dissolved and the county of Kempen-Krefeld was established. The city of Viersen was incorporated into the county of Kempen-Krefeld on 1 January 1970. In 1975 the county was renamed and Viersen became seat of the county. In 1975 boundaries of the counties in Aachen region had been redrawn. The new county of Viersen was established consisting of all the municipalities of former county of Kempen-Krefeld. The municipality of Niederkrüchten also was incorporated. The Kempen borough of Hüls became part of the city of Krefeld, the municipality of Osterath and the subcounty (Amt) of Lank were excorporated to Meerbusch city.

Description of flag:
The flag's ratio is 3:5. It is a yellow over blue horizontal bicolour. The coat of arms is slightly shifted to the hoist.
Description of coat of arms:
The shield is divided per pale. The dexter side shows a black, rampant, sinister facing lion tongued red in a golden (=yellow) field. The sinister side shows a golden (= yellow), rampant, double queued lion armed and tongued red in a blue field. The silver (=white) chief is divided by a black centred cross.
Meaning:
According to source the black lion is symbolizing the duchy of Jülich representing the former subcounty (Amt) of Brüggen. The golden lion is symbolizing the duchy of Geldern representing the former subcounty (Amt) of Krickenberg and the shire (Vogtei) of Tönisberg. Upper geldern had been divided between Prussia and the Netherlands in 1815. The cross is symbolizing the archbishopric and electorate of Köln.

The coat of arms was approved by Prussian ministry of state on 13 May 1932 for former county of Kempen-Krefeld. Flag, banner and coat of arms were approved by Regierungspräsident Düsseldorf on 16 October 1980.
