Waldsassen Coat of Arms

Shield Argent, trees Vert issuant from a base of the same, over all an abbot in half length portrait, dressed Argent with mitre of the same holding a crozier Or in pale by his sinister hand and an inescutcheon Or charged with a fleur-de-lis Azure by his dexter hand.
Meaning:
In 1693 Elector Max II Emmanuel of Bayern granted the rights of a market town and the arms. Meadow and trees are alluding to the name of the town, which means "settlers in a forest". The abbot is alluding to the namesake Cistercian Waldsassen Monastery. In 1812 the arms were reduced to a white fleur-de-lis on a blue shield. This pattern prevailed until 1854 on all local seals and arms. The old arms were restored in 1855. In 1928 Otto Hupp replaced the red background tincture by a white one.
