Introduction

The municipality was established on 1 July 1969, uniting several villages from former counties of Soest and Beckum. The city has about 12,000 inhabitants and is located in the northwestern corner of nowadays county of Soest on both banks of river Lippe.
Lippetal consists of 11 villages:
Brockhausen, Heintrop-Büninghausen, Herzfeld, Hovestadt, Hultrop, Krewinkel-Wiltrop, Lippborg, Niederbauer, Nordwald, Oestinghausen und Schoneberg.
The biggest among them are Oestinghausen (over 2,000 inhabitants), Lippborg and Herzfeld (both over 3,000 inhabitants). The latter is famous for its pilgrimage to worship St.Ida, the patron saint of the local parish church. Furthermore it is said, that nearly every female of that village has "Ida" as 2nd Christian name.
