Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
Shield Argent, a cross patty fitchy Sable, in centre charged with a golden bowl, containing the head Argent of St. John the Baptist.
Meaning:
Visselhövede had been seat of a parish church and a count's courtyard (German: Gogericht) , i.e. the court of a shire, guided by a count as agent of the sovereign, long before the settlement got minor city rights (German: Weichbildrechte) in 1450 by bishop of Asel as Bishop of Verden, the local ruler. Visselhövede gained city rights in 1938. The cross patty fitchy is the symbol of the Bishopric of Verden. St. John the Baptist had already been the patron saint of the local parish church since 1258. Please note that the face of St. John sometimes is displayed Proper with hair Argent, sometimes Or.
The arms were granted in 1581 by Eberhard of Holle, Coadjutor and later Bishop of Verden. The arms were confirmed in 1885
