Shield Argent, issuant from base a Roman legionnaire in armour Or including a helmet Or crested by plumes Gules, splitting his coat Gules by a sword Argent hilted Or in bend sinister and sharing the coat with a kneeling beggar issuant from base.
Meaning:
The legionnaire is of course St. Martin, the local patron saint. The existence of the first town seal from 1745 is proven by a painting from 1811. The saint is standing on a cushion. The pattern remained basically the same, though it changed various times in details. The current pattern is based on a seal from 1837. It was emended in 1928 and a second time after 1968. The market town gained city rights in 1953.
