Description of coat of arms:
Shield Gules, a crowned lion rampant guardant Argent.
Meaning:
The arms were approved in 1951 to the former municipality of Oesede and confirmed in 1970 to the new city of Georgsmarienhütte, which was named after Georgsmarienhütte GmbH (an equivalent to a Limited), a steel corporation. It had been the arms of the Lords of Oesede. The family became extinct in 1363 and had founded the local convent in 1170. The convent also used the lion of the family. The colours are those of the Counts of Calvelage, later Counts of Ravensberg.

The flag's ratio is 3:5. It was a red over white horizontal bicolour with centred arms.

Description of coat of arms:
Shield parted per pale, at dexter Argent eight torteaux ordered in two pales of four, at sinister Gules a lion rampant Argent.
Meaning:
The lion is taken from the arms of the Lords of Varendorff, who founded the local castle in 1280. The eight red discs are taken from the arms of the Von Stael kin, who bought the castle with associated estates in 1444.
The arms were approved in 1968 by Regierungspräsident of Osnabrück.
